Opening sensor test centre 15 October
Sensor technology offers opportunities to improve drinking water quality
On 15 October, by opening of the sensor test centre SenTec, the project SAWA (Sensors and Water) officially has been started.
SAWA is a northern innovation project in which companies and knowledge institutions, mainly from the northern part of the Netherlands, are developing highly advanced sensors for measuring drinking water quality. With this SAWA aims to give a solid incentive to the quality and efficiency of drinking water supply, to knowledge development and to the economy of the northern part of the Netherlands. The results are expected to be broadly applicable in the water sector throughout the world, including for other water types such as process water and waste water.
The project has been initiated by Waterlaboratorium Noord (WLN), N.V. NOM, Waterbedrijf Groningen, Waterleidingmaatschappij Drenthe and Sensor Universe. Participants of SAWA are: AVIC, AquaExplorer BV, Bright Spark BV, Capilix BV, INCAS 3, Interline Systems BV, KWR Watercycle Research Institute, Microdish BV, 2M Sensors LTD, MicroLAN, Noordelijke Hogeschool Leeuwarden, Wetsus centre of excellence for sustainable water technology, Waterlaboratorium Noord, Waterbedrijf Groningen and Waterleidingmaatschappij Drenthe.
The beating heart of SAWA is the purpose-equipped sensor test centre SenTec, offering all provisions for testing the developed sensors for various water qualities. The SenTec has been established at the premises of Waterlaboratorium Noord (WLN) in Glimmen.
The SAWA project runs until 1 July 2013 and will cost over 8 million Euros. Just over half of these costs are raised by the project participants. The project is co-financed by the Dutch provinces of Fryslan, Groningen and Drenthe, the European Regional Development Fund, Samenwerkingsverband Noord-Nederland and the Ministry of Economic Affairs (within the scope of the project 'Pieken in de Delta')
